Purpose of elections:

  Elections were held for 50 elective seats in the National Council, these being the first elections since dissolution of the National Assembly by the Amir on 3 July 1986. The previous general elections were held on 20 February 1985.


Background and outcome of elections:

  A total of 524 candidates competed for the 50 elective seats of the National Council. Although opposition leaders called for a boycott, voter turnout of 62% was claimed by the Government. The first session of the National Council was held on 9 July 1990.
