About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
President Ilham Aliyev's New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) retained a clear majority in the 125 member National Assembly. On 11 February, the police detained more than 20 opposition and independent candidates who were protesting against the results. The Interior Ministry denied the accusation of vote rigging. The Central Electoral Commission subsequently annulled the election results in four constituencies.

The 2020 elections were held nine months earlier than they were due. President Aliyev, in power since 2003, dissolved the National Assembly in December 2019. The move followed changes to key positions in the government, including that of prime minister (Mr. Ali Asadov replaced Mr. Novruz Mammadov as prime minister). The YAP supported the dissolution of the National Assembly, stating that the composition of the legislature needed to change in order to carry out the President’s reform programme. A record 1,314 candidates stood for the 2020 elections, up from 767 in 2015. As was the case in 2015, the major opposition alliance, the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) boycotted the 2020 elections, citing the lack of “minimum conditionsˮ for free and fair elections. Observers from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) stated “significant procedural violations during counting and the tabulation raised concerns whether the results were established honestlyˮ.
