Results

About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
The Seychelles Democratic Alliance (Lalyans Demokratik Seselwa, LDS), which endorsed Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan as its presidential candidate, won both the parliamentary and presidential elections, defeating President Danny Faure’s United Seychelles party (see note). This was the first time that the LDC had won the presidency of the country.

The 2020 elections were held amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, which seriously affected the country’s tourism industry, although the Seychelles itself recorded fewer than 150 (mostly imported) cases. The parliamentary elections were constitutionally due by September 2021 but were moved forward to 2020 upon a proposal from the President, who said holding parliamentary and presidential elections together would save on costs. 

Note: 
The Seychelles People's Progressive Front (Parti Lepep, SPPF) renamed itself United Seychelles in November 2018. The SPPF had held the presidency of the country since 1977 when it came to power through a coup d'etat.

Other notes
Note on the statutory number of the National Assembly: 
In June 2016, the National Assembly voted to amend the law on elections to create a new and 26th constituency, Ile Perseverance. That would have increased the total number of members to a maximum of 36 (including up to 10 seats allotted under the proportional representation system). In September 2016, the Constitutional Court nullified the provision that would have allowed voters in Ile Perseverance to vote in 2017 and postponed the elections in Ile Perseverance until the following general election (due by 2021). Consequently, the number of members elected under the First Past The Post (FPTP) system remained at 25. In addition, the 2016 legislature comprised eight compensatory seats, or 33 members in all.
The number of constituencies increased to 26 in the 2020 elections to include the new constituency of Ile Perseverance. In addition to 26 FPTP seats, 9 compensatory seats were allotted in 2020. The new legislature thus comprises 35 members in all.
