About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
As was the case in the preceding elections held in 2016, no party won an outright majority in the 150-member National Council in 2020. The coalition led by Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (O'LANO, see note 1), led by Mr. Igor Matovic, came first, taking 53 seats (up from 19), winning 16 more seats than Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini’s Smer–Social Democracy (Smer-SD), which came second with 38 seats (down from 49). The O'LANO subsequently formed a four-party coalition government (see note 2) thereby ousting the Smer-SD which had governed the country since 2012. The newly elected National Council held its first session on 20 March amid the COVID-19 pandemic, obliging all members to wear a mask. The following day, President Zuzana Caputova (the country’s first female President elected in 2019) inaugurated the new government led by Prime Minister Matovic.

The anti-corruption agenda dominated the 2020 election campaign which was held shortly after the beginning of the trial in February 2018 for the murder of a journalist who had been investigating high-level corruption scandals. The murder had prompted mass protests, which forced the then Prime Minister Robert Fico to resign in March 2018. However, his Smer-SD party remained in power until the 2020 elections.
