About the election
Short description of the context and results of the election.
President Emomali Rahmon's People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) swept 47 seats in the 63-member House of Representatives. The remaining seats went to pro-government parties. The newly elected House of Representatives held its first session on 17 March and elected Deputy Prime Minister Zokirzoda Mahmadtohir as its new Speaker. The National Assembly (an indirectly elected upper chamber) was renewed on 27 March. On 17 April, it elected Mr. Rustam Emomali, the son of President Rahmon (in power since 1992), as its new Speaker – the second highest post in the State.
The 2020 elections were the first to be held after the Supreme Court outlawed in 2015 the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT, led by Mr. Muhiddin Kabiri ), calling it a terrorist organization, an allegation that it denied. Election campaigning was reportedly low profile. IRPT leaders called on voters to support the Social Democratic Party (SDP, led by Mr. Rahmatillo Zoirov), the sole opposition party that contested the 2020 elections. The SDP, which failed to win seats, rejected the election results, stating the voting was "not a legal but a political and fraudulent decision".
