Prior to independence, under French administration, women were granted the right to vote to the French parliament in 1945 and to the local legislative assembly in 1956 by the Loi-cadre Deferre. This right was confirmed at independence. (Women participated in the first legislative elections on 1946 after Togo's application for suffrage was completed and the French decree of 22 August 1945 was entered into force)
