About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
The Communist Party – the only legal political party in Viet Nam – took 485 seats in the 500-member National Assembly (see note 1). A total of 296 members joined the National Assembly for the first time. In all, 151 women were elected. The 2021 elections were held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the election commission, turnout was 99.57 per cent. On 20 July, the newly elected National Assembly held its first session. The new Chairman, Mr. Vuong Dinh Hue, presided (see note 2).

Note 1:
In 2021, 14 non-party members were elected (down from 21 in 2016). One seat will remain vacant in the new legislature after the election commission invalidated the election of a candidate based on eligibility conditions.

Note 2:
The new Chairman was elected by the outgoing legislature on 31 March 2021, replacing Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. On 5 April, the outgoing legislature also elected Mr. Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the Communist Party's Central Organization Committee, as the new Prime Minister. He replaced Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who himself was elected as the new President (a largely ceremonial post). The former President Nguyen Phu Trong had been re-elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party (the party’s highest post) for a rare third term on 31 January 2021.
