The women’s caucus in the Albanian parliament was first established in 1995 and was renewed in 2008 with the support of the OSCE Presence in Albania. The caucus contributed to the passing of the 2008 Gender Equality Law and the inclusion of a gender quota in the Electoral Code, which stipulates that for each electoral zone, at least thirty per cent of the parties’ lists should contain names of both men and women.

Activities
Issues dealt with by the caucus
• Increase the participation of women in the Assembly of the Republic of Albania and in local government minimally by 40% within 10 years
• Achieve the same level of employment for women in government institutions in all leadership positions
• Protecting the dignity of women, eradicating domestic violence and gender-based violence against women and girls
• Achieving the goal of economic empowerment of women in urban and rural areas by helping especially women heads of households and mothers in need
• Aiming at a greater participation of women in cultural, artistic, media, and science in Albania
• Propose new actions and legal initiatives for the implementation of gender quotas and ensuring gender equality in Albania
