Other notes
Note on the statutory number:
Article 121 of the 2020 Constitution stipulates that two thirds of members in the Council of the Nation (two members per wilaya (province)) are directly elected, while one third of members are appointed by the President of the Republic.

The Council of the Nation, renewed in December 2018, comprised a total of 144 members as follows:
- 96 members (2 members in each of the country’s 48 wilayas) indirectly elected by the People's Communal Assemblies and the People's Wilaya Assemblies.
- 48 members appointed by the President of the Republic.

On 21 February 2021, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that 10 administrative constituencies in the south of the country had been promoted to become new wilayas. The number of wilayas has thus increased from 48 to 58.

Consequently, the statutory number of members in the Council of the Nation has increased to 174 members as follows:
- 116 members (2 members in each of the country’s 58 wilayas) indirectly elected by the People's Communal Assemblies and the People's Wilaya Assemblies;
- 58 members appointed by the President of the Republic.

Article 122 of the Constitution stipulates that half of the membership is renewed every three years. The 2022 elections (which had been due by December 2021) were thus held for 68 indirectly elected seats as follows:
- Half of the 96 indirectly elected members in the Council of the Nation (48);
- Two indirectly elected members from each of the 10 new wilayas (20).

In addition, 34 members were appointed by the President:
- Half of the 48 appointed members in the outgoing legislature (24);
- 10 new members to take account of the increase in the number of wilayas from 48 to 58.
