About the election
Short description of the context and results of the election.
Indirect elections to the Senate were held for 66 of the 72 seats in the Senate. Elections to six seats in the Pool Department were not held due to security reasons. In accordance with the ministerial decision of July 2017, the parliamentary mandate of five outgoing senators representing the Pool Department has been extended until new elections are held. The seat of one woman Senator of the Congolese Workers Party (PCT) who was elected from the Pool Department and who passed away in 2016, remains vacant until the new elections.
Senators serve a six-year term. Up to the 2014 elections, half the Senate was renewed every three years. Starting with the 2017 renewal (held in keeping with the 2015 Constitution) the Senate is fully renewed every six years.
