About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
The opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS, led by Mr. Petr Fiala) took 10 of the 27 seats at stake, holding 15 seats in the 81-member Senate. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš' ANO party and its ally, the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD, led by former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Jan Hamáček), won just one seat each, although they remained the largest force in the new Senate, with 19 seats in all. For the first time since 1996, the Senate will not include a member of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM), after it failed to defend its last Senate seat in 2018 (see note). On 14 November, Mr. Jaroslav Kubera (ODS) was elected Senate President in the final election round, defeating Mr. Václav Hampl (CSSD). Mr. Kubera replaced Mr. Milan Štěch (CSSD), who had served in the post since 2010.

During the election campaign, the ODS pledged to establish a safeguard against what it termed the "semi-communist" coalition government. It promised to develop effective infrastructure and public services.

Note:
The KSČM supported the ANO-CSSD coalition government formed in June 2018, following the October 2017 Chamber of Deputies elections.
