About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
Opposition parties swept 26 of the 27 seats at stake in the one-third renewal of the 81-member Senate. The Mayors and Independents (STAN), led by Mr. Vít Rakušan, came first with 11 seats. The traditional left-wing parties suffered losses: the Civic Democratic Party (ODS, led by Mr. Petr Fiala) lost five seats, while the Christian Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU - CSL, led by Mr. Marian Jurečka) lost two. Prime Minister Andrej Babis’s ANO 2021 party only took one seat. The Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD), led by Mr. Jan Hamáček, failed to re-win any of the 10 seats that it had held before the 2020 elections. Following the elections, STAN and ODS became the largest forces in the Senate, holding 19 seats each together with their allies. KDU - CSL became the third largest force with 15 seats. On 11 November, Mr. Miloš Vystrčil (ODS) was re-elected unopposed as the Senate President.

The 2020 elections were held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Quarantined voters were allowed to cast ballots from vehicles at temporary polling stations across the country. Turnout was low: only 36.74 per cent of 2.8 million voters turned out at the polls, down from 42.26 per cent in 2018.
