About the election Short description of the context and results of the election.
The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won an unprecedented fifth consecutive term, including four under incumbent Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. The DLP took 17 of 22 seats at stake in the 32-member House of Assembly (see note). The DLP defeated sole rival the United Workers’ Party (UWP), led by Mr. Lennox Linton. A record eight women – including the Prime Minister’s wife Melissa Poponne-Skerrit – were elected, up from three in 2014. On 17 December, President Charles Savarin swore in a new Cabinet led by Prime Minister Skerrit. During election campaigning, the DLP promised better socio-economic conditions and the construction of a new international airport. The UWP promised a new development path and demanded more rigorous checking of voter registrations and a prohibition on Dominicans abroad returning to vote. Note: In addition, there are nine other members appointed by the President and two ex officio members (the Speaker and the Attorney General).
