Senators serve a six-year term. About half of them are renewed every three years using two “series”:
- Series 1 (170 seats, last renewed in 2017)
- Series 2 (178 seats, last renewed in 2014)
The 2020 elections were held to renew 172 of the 178 seats in Series 2 in accordance with Law no. 2020-976 of 3 August 2020, which stipulated that the six senators representing French citizens abroad would be renewed in September 2021.
Elections to those six seats were held on 26 September 2021. Two women and four men were elected.
As at 1 October, there were 122 women among the 348 senators.
