The right to vote at the national level was in the Constitution of 1 January 1952 established, at the local level, women were granted the right to vote in 1949.

The Constitution of 1927 provides that all Greek citizens are equal in law and that "political rights can be conferred to women by law". The Law N° 959 of April 1949 accorded women with the right to stand for office in municipal and communal elections.
