Note on the Distribution of seats according to sex
Early elections to the Senate were held following the 2022 constitutional amendments, which increased the statutory number of senators from 49 to 50. The chamber now comprises 40 indirectly elected senators (up from 34), and 10 members appointed by the President (down from 15).
Five of the appointed members are proposed by the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan, an advisory body chaired by the President. The Assembly aims to represent the various ethnic groups that make up Kazakhstan.
As at 26 January 2023, there were a total of 11 women out of 50 senators as follows:
- 3 women elected in 2023 (out of 20 senators)
- 6 women out of the other 20 indirectly elected senators whose term was not up for renewal in 2023
- 2 women appointed by the President (out of 10 senators)
The term of the Senate remains at six years. Half of the Senate membership is renewed every three years, as was the case previously. The minimum age of eligibility remains the same (30 years old).
