Prior to the first session of Parliament, Mr. Moses Masika Wetang'ula, from the party Forum for the Restoration of Democracy – Kenya (FORD–Kenya), resigned from the Senate. He was elected the new Speaker of the National Assembly on 8 September, and as a result, became an ex-officio member of the Assembly.
