Prior to independence, under the administration of the French Trust Territory, equality of all citizens before the law was enshrined in Article 7 of the constitution of 26 May 1926 without specific affirmation of women's rights. The electoral law was amended between 1952 and 1953 to introduce full women's suffrage.
