About the election
Short description of the context and results of the election.
View field in the data dictionary -
The ruling Democrats for Andorra (DA) and its allies remained the largest force with 11 seats but lost the majority in the 28-member General Council. The DA endorsed its new leader Xavier Espot as its premiership candidate, instead of Prime Minister Antoni Marti (in power since 2011). The Social Democrat Party (PS), led by Mr. Pere López Agràs, came second. Liberals of Andorra (LA , formerly Liberal Party of Andorra, PLA) and its splinter party, the Third Way (“Tercera Via”), took four seats each.
The newly elected General Council elected Ms. Roser Suñé Pascuet (DA) as its Speaker, who thereby became the first woman in Andorra to assume the post. Mr. X. Espot (DA) was sworn in as Prime Minister on 16 May. He formed a coalition government comprising the DA, LA and the Committed Citizens (« (“Ciutadans compromesos »”) on 22 May.
The 2019 elections were the first to be held after the end of banking secrecy which came into effect in January 2018. The country experienced rare demonstrations since March 2018. Demonstrators protested against reforms ion the public sector amongst others. The Ggovernment raised the minimum wage and pension in January 2019.
