About the election
Short description of the context and results of the election.

For the first time since its foundation in 1956, the Freedom Party (FPÖ), a far-right party led by Mr. Herbert Kickl, became the largest force in the 183-member National Council, winning 57 seats (up from 31 in 2019). By contrast, Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s People's Party (ÖVP) sharply reduced its share of seats from 71 in 2019 to 51 in 2024. The ÖVP’s traditional rival, the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ, led by Mr. Andreas Babler), came third, winning 41 seats. NEOS (“New Austria”, led by Ms. Beate Meinl-Reisinger) increased its share of seats to 18, winning two more than the Greens, the ÖVP’s coalition partner.
The key electoral issues in 2024 included the cost of living, migration and the war in Ukraine. Deadly flooding in September pushed climate change to the centre of election campaigning.
The major parties ruled out a coalition government with the FPÖ. On 22 October, President Alexander Van der Bellen (Greens) tasked Mr. Nehammer (ÖVP) with forming a government. The President said he had asked the ÖVP leader to begin talks with the SPÖ.
