About the election

The 2024 parliamentary elections once again resulted in a fragmented House of Representatives, which now comprises 16 parties, up from 12 in 2024. The New Flemish Alliance (N-VA, led by Mr. Bart De Wever) remained the largest party, winning 24 seats in the 150-member House. The Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest, led by Mr. Tom Van Grieken) became one of two second-largest parties, winning 20 seats. The Movement for Reform (MR, led by Mr. George-Louis Bouchez) also won 20 seats. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo’s Open Vld party reduced its share of seats from 12 to 7 (note 1). He tendered his resignation to King Philippe, which the King accepted.

The 2024 elections were held in parallel with regional elections and the elections to the European Parliament (note 2). The key electoral issues included the economy, migration, purchasing power and security.

Note 1:
Mr. De Croo has led a seven-party coalition government since 30 September 2020, following a record 541 days of negotiations after the previous elections in 2019. The coalition comprised his Open Vld party, MR, the Christian Democratic and Flemish party (CD&V), the Socialist Party in Wallonia (PS), Vooruit (formerly the Flemish socialist party, SP.A), GROEN (the Flemish green party) and Ecolo (Greens - Walloon).

Note 2:
The minimum voting age for parliamentary elections remains 18 years old. As of 2024, citizens between 16 and 17 years of age are allowed to vote in the European Parliament elections.
