About the election

Despite being the sixth set in three years, the 2024 elections still returned a fragmented parliament. The Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria – Union of Democratic Forces (GERB–UDF), the party of the former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, remained the largest force in the new legislature, winning 68 seats in the 240-member National Assembly. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS, led by Mr. Delyan Peevski) came second with 47 seats (up from fourth place in 2023). By contrast, former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov’s party, We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria, reduced its share of seats from 64 to 39 and finished third. The 2024 elections recorded a low turn out of 34%, down from 40% in 2023.

On 19 June, the newly elected National Assembly held its first session. The following day, it elected Ms. Raya Nazaryan (GERB-UDF) as its new Speaker. On 1 July, President Rumen Radev tasked former Speaker Rosen Zhelyazkov (GERB-UDF) with forming a new government.

The early elections in 2024 were triggered by the collapse in March 2024 of a coalition government, comprising GERB–UDF and We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (under the premiership of Mr. Nikolai Denkov from We Continue the Change). Following an impasse in forming a new government, on 9 April, President Rumen Radev called snap elections for 9 June, the same day as those to the European Parliament.
