President Luis Abinader’s Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and its allies won a landslide victory, winning 146 seats in the 190-member Chamber of Deputies and 24 seats in the 32-member Senate. Former President Leonel Fernández’s People’s Force (FP) and its allies came a distant second, with 24 seats in the lower chamber and 3 in the Senate. The number of women increased from 53 (27.9%) to 70 (36.8%) in the Chamber of Deputies, while it remained at 4 (12.5%) in the Senate. In the presidential elections held in parallel with the parliamentary polls, the incumbent, President Abinader (PRM), was re-elected.
The major electoral issues in 2024 included the economy, crime and security. President Abinader promised to continue to work on development, reform, and the fight against corruption. The 2024 elections were held amid a spiralling political crisis in neighbouring Haiti, which led the Abinader administration to close the island’s shared border with Haiti, and Dominican airspace.
