About the election

The Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by former Finance Minister Antti Rinne, became the largest party in the 200-member Parliament, taking 40 seats; nine more than Prime Minister Juha Sipila’s Centre Party (KESK), which had led a three-party coalition (see note 1). A record 94 women were elected. On 6 June, Parliament approved Mr. Rinne’s five-party coalition government (see note 2), who thereby became the first SDP Prime Minister since 16 years ago. His 19-member Cabinet, comprising 11 women, pledged to make the nation of 5.5 million “a sustainable society socially, economically and ecologically”. Later on the same day, President Sauli Niinistő officially appointed the Cabinet.

During the election campaign, the major parties focused on climate change, healthcare and welfare reforms. The SDP promised to boost public spending by some Euro 1.2 billion, so as to allot more budgets for education, infrastructure investments, social services and the military.

Note 1:

The outgoing government comprised the KESK, the Finns Party (PS) and the National Coalition Party (KOK).

Note 2:

The new Cabinet comprises the SDP, the KESK, the Green League (Vihr), the Left Alliance (Vas) and the Swedish People’s Party (RKP).
