About the election

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s FijiFirst party won the elections but reduced its share of seats from 32 to 27 in the 51-member Parliament (see note). The Social Democratic Liberal Party (Soldelpa), now led by former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, increased its share from 15 to 21 seats. Ten women were elected, up from eight in 2014. Outgoing Speaker Ms. Jiko Luveni (who herself is not an MP) was re-elected Speaker of the new legislature.

During the election campaign, FijiFirst ran on its record in government: economic growth, low unemployment and free education. The Soldelpa leader Mr. Rabuka promised to strengthen industry, trade and good governance. He also promised to re-establish the Great Council of Chiefs, disbanded in March 2012.

Note:

The statutory number of seats in Parliament has increased from 50 to 51 to take account of an increase in the population.
