About the election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, won a majority in the 276-member Parliament (see note 1). It took 183 seats, up from 137 in 2020. By contrast, the New Patriotic Party (NPP, the party of the outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo) reduced its share of seats from 137 to 88. In the presidential elections held in parallel with the parliamentary poll, former President Mahama (NDC) defeated Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP).

On 7 January 2025, Mr. Mahama was sworn in, succeeding President Akufo-Addo (NPP, see note 2). Mr. Mahama’s running mate, Ms. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, was also sworn in, and thereby became the first woman Vice-President of Ghana. The newly elected Parliament held its first session on the same day, and re-elected Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin (NDC) as its Speaker.

The 2024 elections were held amid a severe economic crisis that has triggered high unemployment, in particular among young people. During election campaigning, the major parties focused on the economy and tax reforms.

Note 1:
The statutory number of members has increased from 275 to 276.

Note 2:
Mr. Akufo-Addo was unable to seek a new term under the Constitution’s two-term limit.
