About the election

No party won an outright majority in 2024, as has been the case for the three previous elections held since 2015. The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), a pro-EU party led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, remained the largest force in the 151-member Parliament. The HDZ and its allies won 61 seats, while the main opposition Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP, led by President Zoran Milanović) and its allies won 42 seats (see note). The 2024 elections saw a high turnout: 62.3%, up from 42% in 2020. A record 50 women were elected, up from 35 in 2020.

On 17 May, Parliament elected Mr. Plenković as the Prime Minister, giving him a third term in office. His new government comprises the HDZ, as well as the Homeland Movement (DP), which entered government for the first time.

The 2024 elections were the first to be held after Croatia joined the EU's Schengen free travel area and the eurozone in 2023. They were held against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which started in 2022. The key electoral issues included security, the country’s aid to Ukraine, and corruption.

Note:
The HDZ won 55 seats on its own, while the SDP took 37.
