KEWOPA subscribes to the belief that women -- just like men -- have equal rights to participate in all aspects of the governance of Kenya, and are therefore is committed to ensuring that the country’s policy and legislative frameworks redress gender disparities and other injustices that undermine sustainable development.
KEWOPA has in the past achieved a myriad of milestones attributed to its' core functions – legislation, representation, and oversight including:
• Gender mainstreamed into the 2008 and 2012 Standing Orders of Parliament
• Advocated and lobbied for the enactment of key family laws, such as, the 2013 Matrimonial Properties Act , the 2014 Marriage Act, and Protection Against Domestic Violence Act
• Contributed to the drafting of and enactment of the 2010 Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act
• Developed Gender Responsive Budgeting Guidelines for the Kenyan Parliament
• Continuously advocated for the Two-Thirds Gender Bill in the 11th and 12th Parliaments that will realise the two thirds principle as is required by the Constitution of Kenya
• Contributed towards the realisation of other key legislation including: Access to Information Act, Victim Protection Act, Reproductive HealthCare Bill, Food Security Bill
• Mentored over 500 young women leaders and Women Members of County Assemblies
• Spearheaded the formation of women caucuses in the counties
