Results

About the election

The Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) took 158 seats in the 164-member National Assembly, which had previously comprised 149 members. The percentage of women decreased from 27.52 per cent (41 women out of 149 members) in 2016 to 21.95 per cent (36 women out of 164 members) in 2021.

On 22 March 2021, the newly elected National Assembly elected Mr. Saysomphone Phomvihane as its new President, replacing Ms. Pany Yathotou. It also elected Mr. Phankham Viphavanh as Prime Minister. The General Secretary of the LPRP and outgoing Prime Minister, Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, was elected by the Assembly as the country’s new President (replacing Mr. Bounnhang Vorachith). Mr. Sisoulith promised to work for stability, national economic growth and poverty reduction in the country. The National Assembly also elected outgoing President of the National Assembly, Ms. Pany Yathotou, and Mr. Bounthong Chitmany as Vice Presidents of Lao. All the new and old office holders belong to the LPRP.
