About the election

The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), now led by Mr. Philip J. Pierre, regained power after five years in opposition. It took 13 of the 17 seats at stake in the House of Assembly, thereby ousting Prime Minister Allen Chastanet’s United Workers Party (UWP), which took 2 seats. On 28 July, Mr. Pierre was sworn in as the new Prime Minister. On 17 August, the House of Assembly elected former Senate President Claudius Francis as its new Speaker (see note). It also elected Mr. Jeremiah Norbert (SLP) as the Deputy Speaker, the post which had been left vacant in the 2016 legislature. The 11-member Senate, renewed at the same time as the House, elected Mr. Stanley Felix as its new President. The number of women senators increased from three (27.27%) in 2016 to five (45.45%) in 2021.

The 2021 elections were held during the COVID-19 pandemic. On 4 May, the UWP-led government extended the National COVID Emergency Act through October, which could have delayed the 2021 elections. On 5 July, Prime Minister Chastanet announced elections would be held on 26 July. During the election campaign, the major parties focused on the economy, job creation as well as on various social benefits.

Note:

The Speaker may be designated from outside parliament and becomes a member of parliament by virtue of holding the office of Speaker. Since Mr. Claudius Francis, who was not one of the directly elected members, became the Speaker, the number of members of the House of Assembly increased to 18, as was the case in the last legislature.
