About the election

The Homeland Union - Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), led by Mr. Gabrielius Landsbergis, became the largest force, taking 50 seats in the 141-member parliament. Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis’s Lithuanian Peasant Popular Union (LVŽS) finished second, reducing its share of seats from 54 to 32. On 9 November, TS-LKD signed an agreement with the Liberals Movement of the Republic of Lithuania (LRLS, 13 seats) and the Freedom Party (LP, 11 seats) to form a coalition government under a former presidential candidate, Ms. Ingrida Šimonytė, who had headed the TS-LKD list in 2020.

On 13 November, the newly elected Parliament elected Ms. Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen (LRLS) as its new Speaker. On 25 November, Parliament elected Ms. Šimonytė (TS-LKD) as the new Prime Minister. President Gitanas Nausėda (independent) officially appointed her later on the same day. On 11 December, the three-party coalition formed a gender-equal government, comprising seven men and seven women.

The 2020 elections were held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The LVŽS-led government launched a €2 billion financial package to help businesses affected by the pandemic. Voters respected social distancing measures and brought their own pens to polling stations. TS-LKD promised more transparency and science-based decisions in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.
