About the election

Three parties in the outgoing government led by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (see note) retained a narrow majority in the 60-member Chamber of Deputies, taking 31 seats in all. The Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), led by Mr. Claude Wiseler, remained the largest party in parliament, taking 21 seats (down from 23). The Pirate Party (PIRATEN) entered the Chamber of Deputies for the first time along with two other parties from the outgoing legislature. The major electoral issues in the 2018 elections included transport, housing, the economy and educaon. Mr. Bettel promised to prioritize the environment.

On 16 October, Grand Duke Henri invited Mr. Bettel (PD/DP) to form a government. On 3 December, Mr. Bettel formed a coalition government comprising the same three parties. This was approved by the Chamber of Deputies on 6 December. The coalition plan envisages free public transport as of 2020.

Note:

The outgoing government comprised Mr. Bettel’s Democrat Party (PD/DP), the Socialist Workers' Party (POSL/LSAP), led Economy Minister Étienne Schneider, and the Greens (DEI GRÉNG), led by Justice Minister Félix Braz.
