About the election

President Andry Rajoelina’s party, Isika Rehetra Miaraka amin'i (IRMAR, meaning “We Are All with Andry Rajoelina”) won 84 seats in the 163-member National Assembly (note 1) according to the results announced by the High Constitutional Court on 28 June 2024. IRMAR’s main rival, the Firaisankina platform (note 2), led by former President Marc Ravalomanana, came a distant second, winning 22 seats. Independent candidates won most of the remaining seats.

The 2024 parliamentary elections followed the presidential election held in November 2023, which was boycotted by the opposition. The 2024 elections were held amid political tension, during which a number of opposition members and leaders reported receiving threatening and intimidating calls. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights called on the Malagasy authorities to ensure respect for the right to freedom, and the independence of the judiciary ahead of the High Constitutional Court’s ruling on election disputes.

Note 1:
The statutory number of members increased from 151 to 163 in accordance with the decision of the Government on 13 March 2024. This followed the creation of a new district, Antanimora Atsimo, and the subsequent re-allocation of the number of seats elected from each district based on the number of inhabitants.

Note 2:
The Firaisankina platform includes President Ravalomanana’s party, Tiako I Madagasikara (TIM, “I Love Madagascar”).
