About the election
Short description of the context and results of the election.

The opposition electoral coalition "Your Macedonia" (headed by the party VMRO-DPMNE and led by Mr. Hristijan Mickoski) came first, taking 58 seats in the 123-member Assembly of the Republic (see note). The electoral coalition "For a European Future" (led by the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) of Mr. Dimitar Kovacevski) came second, tied with the "European Front" electoral coalition (led by the Democratic Union for Integration – DUI). On 28 May, the newly elected Assembly of the Republic elected as its Speaker Mr. Afrim Gashi of the VLEN electoral coalition, which won 14 seats.
The parliamentary elections were held in parallel with the run-off presidential election. Ms. Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova (VMRO-DPMNE) defeated incumbent President Stevo Pendarovski (SDSM), thereby becoming the first woman in North Macedonia to assume the presidency. On 6 June, the new President tasked Mr. Mickoski (VMRO-DPMNE) with forming a new government. He announced a coalition government comprising his VMRO-DPMNE party, the VLEN electoral coalition, and the party “For our Macedonia” (the ZNAM Movement), which won six seats. The coalition government jointly holds 78 parliamentary seats.
During election campaigning, the major parties focused on the economy, job creation, inflation, and the country’s integration with the European Union.
Note:
The Assembly of the Republic includes three seats reserved for Macedonians abroad. The seats will remain vacant, since the number of registered expatriate voters at the 2024 elections was not high enough to meet the requisite conditions for organizing elections abroad. -

Note on the timing of elections:
In accordance with article 63 of the Constitution, "Elections for Representatives to the Assembly are held within the last 90 days of the term of the current Assembly”. The previous elections were held in July 2020, and the Assembly’s four-year term was due to expire in July 2024. Although the term of the outgoing parliament was shorter than four years, the 2024 elections were considered to have been held upon normal expiry of members’ terms of office. - Sources
