About the election

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's Labour Party (LP) won the snap elections that he had called a month earlier, thus defeating Simon Busuttil's Nationalist Party (PN). The snap elections followed a resignation call from the PN and the subsequent street protests. During the election campaign, the Prime Minister promised continuity and greater wealth for the country. In 2016, Malt recorded a budget surplus for the first time in three decades and unemployment remained low: 4.1%. The PN pledged to introduce a constitutional amendment to guarantee that the government would maintain a balanced budget every year.
