About the election

President Mohamed Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC, a pro-China party) won the elections in a landslide. It took 66 seats (see note 1) in the 93-member People's Majlis (see note 2). By contrast, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is considered as pro-India, sharply reduced its share of seats from 65 to 12. Three women were elected, all from the PNC.

The 2024 elections were the first to be held under President Muizzu. He was elected in 2023, pledging to end the country's "India First" policy. During election campaigning, the major parties focused on foreign policy and the economy.

Note 1:
After the elections, six independent candidates-elect joined the People’s National Congress (PNC). As at 25 April 2024, the PNC thus held a total of 72 seats.

Note 2:
In October 2023, the Elections Commission announced that six new constituencies would be added as of the 2024 elections due to an increase in population. Consequently, the statutory number of members in the People’s Majlis has increased from 87 to 93.
