About the election

The National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), founded by former Mexico City Mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, became the largest force in both chambers of the Congress, taking 255 seats in the 500-member Chamber of Deputies and 58 seats in the 128-member Senate. The National Action Party (PAN, which nominated Mr. Ricardo Anaya as its presidential candidate) became the second largest force in both chambers. Mr. Obrador (MORENA) won the presidential elections held in parallel with the parliamentary polls, campaigning on anti-corruption and reforms. On 1 December, Mr. Obrador was sworn in as the new President.

The 2018 elections, held for a total of 3,400 posts at different levels of the State, were marred by violence. Over 110 candidates had been murdered since the election process began in September 2017.
