The outgoing President Filipe Nyusi’s Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO, see note) retained a two-thirds majority, winning 171 seats in the 250-member Assembly of the Republic. The Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS, a splinter party of FRELIMO) came second, winning 43 seats. The main opposition party in the outgoing legislature, the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), finished third, reducing its share of seats from 60 to 28. In the presidential elections, Mr. Daniel Chapo (FRELIMO), was declared elected. Among others, he defeated Mr. Venâncio Mondlane, an independent candidate backed by PODEMOS. Mr. Mondlane claimed he was the true election winner and called for nationwide protests.
The 2024 elections followed an Islamist insurgency in the north, which had displaced more than 110,000 people by the end of 2023. FRELIMO’s manifesto in 2024 focused on the defence of Mozambican sovereignty and territorial integrity. The 2024 elections were marred by irregularities and violent incidents. On 18 October, two top aides of Mr. Mondlane were shot dead. On 25 October, the European Union Election Observation Mission expressed its concerns regarding the transparency of the counting and tabulation process, and called on the electoral management bodies to display maximum transparency. It also condemned the violent dispersal of demonstrators.
Note:
Mr. Nyusi, in post since January 2015, was constitutionally barred from seeking a new presidential term after serving two mandates. -
