About the election

President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) retained the majority in both houses of the National Assembly, taking over 210 seats in the 360-member House of Representatives and 63 seats in the 109-member Senate. The main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), remained the second largest force in both chambers, with a reduced share of seats. Outgoing Senate President Olubukola Abubakar Saraki, who defected from the APC to the PDP in 2018, lost his seat. The 2019 elections saw a low turnout of 35.66%, down from 43.65% recorded in 2014.

In the presidential elections held in parallel with the parliamentary polls, Mr. Buhari defeated former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar (PDP). The PDP rejected the presidential election results, claiming irregularities in the voter register, an allegation that the election commission denied. On 29 May, Mr. Buhari was sworn in for a second term.

During election campaigning, the major parties focused on the economy, promising to create more jobs and provide better infrastructure. The 2019 elections were initially scheduled for 16 February but were postponed by one week just five hours before polling, reportedly due to the delayed distribution of some ballot papers and results sheets. The elections were relatively peaceful although there were reports of attacks by the Boko Haram Islamist militant group in the north.

Notes:

Following the February 2019 elections, there were initially 12 women out of 355 members of the House of Representative (with five vacant seats) as indicated in the “Members elected, by sex” section.

The results for several seats were subsequently invalidated and elections were repeated for those seats.

“Parties or coalitions winning seats” above refers to the full composition – after the repeated elections – of the 360-member House of Representatives, of whom 13 were women.

Two members then passed away. As at 19 February 2020, therefore, 13 of the 358 members were women.
