About the election

President of the Republic Lionel Aingimea and Speaker Marcus Stephen were re-elected to the 19-member Parliament. Two women members in the outgoing legislature were also re-elected. On 28 September, the newly elected Parliament held its first session and re-elected Mr. Stephen as its Speaker. Outgoing President Lionel Aingimea was elected as the Deputy Speaker. Mr. Russ Kun was elected unopposed as the new President of the Republic. He has been a member of parliament since 2013, representing the country’s largest constituency, Ubenide, and has served as the deputy minister for finance under President Aingimea.

The 2022 elections were the first to be held after the November 2021 referendum on citizenship requirements for parliamentarians, the President and ministers. In all, 71.2% of voters were in favour of reserving these posts for Nauruans and their descendants who became Nauruan citizens in 1968 when the Constitution came into force.
