About the election

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s Law and Justice party (PiS) remained the largest force in the 460-member Sejm with 194 seats, but it fell short of a majority. Civic Coalition (KO), led by Mr. Donald Tusk, a former Prime Minister of Poland and President of the European Council, came second with 157 seats. The Third Way coalition, formed by the Polish People's Party (PSL) and Polska 2050, came third with 65. In the 100-member Senate, KO became the largest force, taking 41 seats. PiS came second with 34 seats, followed by Third Way with 11. On 6 November, President Andrzej Duda (independent, backed by PiS) invited Mr. Morawiecki to form a government.

The 2023 elections were held in parallel with a referendum. The opposition parties called for a boycott of the referendum. It did not receive the requisite 50% turnout to validate the results. Nevertheless, questions asked in the referendum, such as on European Union asylum and migration policy, and the removal of the border barrier with Belarus, became the major electoral issues, along with the war in Ukraine, security, economic stability, and social policies.
