About the election

A record number of women were elected to the Congress: four women (up from one) to the 16-member House of Delegates (25%), and two women to the 15-member Senate (13.3%, see note). In the presidential election held in parallel with the parliamentary polls, incumbent President Surangel Whipps Jr won a second term, defeating his brother-in-law, former President Tommy Remengesau.

Key electoral issues in 2024 included the economy and a cost-of-living crisis, as well as the country’s relationship with Taiwan. President Whipps pledged to diversify Palau’s economy and strengthen security ties with the United States, while protecting Palau’s ocean and forests.

Note:
The statutory number of the Senate has increased from 13 to 15 based on the 2024 Reapportionment Plan published by the Congressional Reapportionment Commission in July 2024. The report cited the need for equal representation based on the latest population data.
