About the election

President Paul Kagame's Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR) remained the largest force in the 80-member Chamber of Deputies, winning 40 of the 53 directly elected seats. An opposition party - the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) - entered the Chamber for the first time, along with the Social Party Imberakuri (PS) and two other parties from the outgoing legislature. The newly elected Chamber of Deputies included 49 women (61.25%), down from 51 previously. It nonetheless remains the chamber with the highest proportion of women members in the world.

During the election campaign, the FPR focused on economic development, promising job creation, agriculture transformation and urban renewal. The DGPR promised to work for the establishment of an import / export bank to ease access to funds for businesses while the PS promised to promote democracy.
