About the election

As was the case in previous elections, no party secured an outright majority in the early elections of 2023. Smer - Social Democracy (Smer-SD), led by former Prime Minister Robert Fico, became the first political force with 42 seats in the 150-member National Council. Progressive Slovakia (PS), led by European Parliament Vice President Mr. Michal Šimečka, came second, winning 32 seats, followed by the Voice (Hlas) - SD party, led by former Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (formerly Smer-SD), which took 27 seats.

On 2 October, President Zuzana Čaputová invited Mr. Fico (Smer-SD) to form a new government. On 16 October, the Smer-SD party formed a three-party coalition with Hlas (“Voice”)-SD and the Slovak National Party (SNS, led by former Speaker Andrej Danko). On 25 October, President Čaputová officially appointed Mr. Fico Prime Minister. He was assuming the post for the fourth time.

The 2023 snap elections followed the dissolution of the governing coalition in December 2022, triggered by a no-confidence vote (note). Elections were constitutionally due by 2024. The key electoral issues included Slovakia's military support for Ukraine, European Union policies (including migration and sanctions against Russia), the economy and LGBT rights.

Note:

The governing coalition formed after the 2020 elections comprised OL’aNO, We Are Family (Sme Rodina), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), and For the People (Za Ľudí). It lost its majority when SaS withdrew its support from the government in September 2022.
