About the election

The Patriots of Senegal (Pastef), led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, won a resounding victory, taking 130 seats in the 165-member National Assembly (see note 1). That paved the way for various reforms announced by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye (Pastef). The main opposition coalition Takku Wallu Senegaal, led by former President Macky Sall (see note 2), came a distant second with 16 seats. The Jam ak Njarin coalition, led by former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, took third place, while other coalitions won fewer than three seats each.

The 2024 snap elections followed the presidential elections in March 2024 (see note3). Key electoral issues in 2024 included measures to counter corruption, reform of the fishing industry, and the 2024 abolition of an amnesty law.

Note 1:
Of the 165 seats, 112 are allocated to multi-member constituencies in the country's 46 districts. Eight seats are reserved for the diaspora. A further 53 seats are allocated proportionally among parties and coalitions, depending on their overall tally.

Note 2:
Takku Wallu Senegaal was formed in September 2024 by former President Sall’s party, Alliance for the Republic (APR), and the Democratic Party of Senegal (PDS), led by another former president, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade. Mr. Sall led the campaign from Morocco where he has lived since April 2024.

Note 3:
Mr. Faye became Pastef’s presidential nominee after the candidacy of its charismatic leader, Mr. Ousmane Sonko, was disqualified by the Supreme Court in November 2023. In March 2024, Mr. Faye defeated, amongst others, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba (who was running for the ruling party in a bid to succeed President Sall, who himself was ineligible after serving two terms). The 44-year-old Faye was sworn in as the new President in April, thereby becoming the youngest Head of State of Senegal. Mr. Faye appointed Mr. Sonko as Prime Minister. On several occasions, Mr. Sonko said that the then opposition-led parliament was hampering his government’s power. On 12 September 2024,* the President dissolved the National Assembly and called early elections for November 2024.
* The National Assembly cannot be dissolved within two years of its first session. The outgoing legislature was dissolved in view of early elections on 12 September 2024, exactly two years after its first session.
