About the election

No party won a majority in the 2018 elections. Prime Minister Patrice Emery Trovoada’s Independent Democratic Alliance (ADI) reduced its share of seats from 33 to 25 in the 55 member National Assembly. The opposition Sao Tome and Principe Liberation Movement – Social Democratic Party (MLSTP–PSD), led by Mr. Jorge Bom Jesus, increased its share from 16 to 23 seats. Hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the Electoral Commission offices alleging fraud in favour of the ADI. Both parties have claimed the right to have precedence in forming the new government.

Before the first session of the newly elected legislature on 22 November, the MLSTP-PSD forged an alliance with the Democratic Convergence Party (PCD) / Force for Democratic Change Movement (MDFM) – Union of Democrats for Citizenship and Development (UDD), which controlled 27 seats in all. The alliance’s candidate, Mr. Delfim Neves (PDC) was elected Speaker.

On 29 November, President Evaristo Carvalho (ADI) appointed Mr. Jorge Bom Jesus (MLSTP-PSD) as Prime Minister. Mr. Jesus’ government, comprising the MLSTP–PSD and PCD/MDFM – UDD, took office on 2 December.
