About the election

The National Unity coalition, led by President Bashar al-Assad’s Baath Arab Party, won 185 seats in the 250-member People’s Assembly. According to the Higher Judicial Committee for elections, turnout was 38% of 19.2 million voters, up from 33% in 2020. In all, 24 women were elected, down from 28 in 2020.

The 2024 elections were the fourth to be held since the 2011 uprising and ensuing civil war. A total of 8,151 polling stations (up from 7,000 in 2020) were set up in 15 voting districts in government-held areas. According to UNHCR, 6.8 million people remained internally displaced in January 2024. As was the case in the three previous elections held amid the civil war, fragmented opposition forces boycotted the 2024 elections.

The 2024 elections were held amid economic downturns due to the civil war and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the devaluation of the country’s currency has triggered food and fuel inflation. Prior to the 2024 elections, in the southern province of Sweida, anti-government protests were organized several times, mainly due to the deteriorating economy. Many protestors also called for a boycott of the 2024 elections.
