About the election

- In December 2002, the National Assembly adopted constitutional amendments, which provided for a bicameral parliament, comprising the National Assembly and a Senate. However, the creation of the Senate has been delayed.
- The new Constitution, promulgated by the President of the Republic in May 2024, retained the bicameral parliament.
- In December 2024, the government announced the first-ever indirect elections to the Senate, scheduled for 2 February 2025. The elections were postponed to 15 February following a request from several political parties to extend the deadline for candidatures.
- The Senate held its inaugural session on 6 March 2025, thereby officially establishing the bicameral parliament.
