About the election

The Broad Front (FA) won a majority in both the 99-member House of Representatives and the 30-member Senate. The FA increased its share of seats in both chambers, to 48 (up from 42) and 16 respectively. President Lacalle Pou’s National Party (PN) remained the second largest force. The Colorado Party (PC) retained its position at third.

In the first round of the presidential elections, held in parallel with the parliamentary polls, no candidate secured a majority. On 24 November, the former Mayor of Canelones, Mr. Yamandú Orsi (FA), defeated Mr. Álvaro Delgado (PN), a senior aid of the outgoing President. Mr. Orsi was backed by the iconic former president, José Mujica (FA), and by the PC in the run-offs. Mr. Orsi will succeed President Lacalle Pou (PN) after being sworn in as the new President on 1 March 2025. Ms. Carolina Cosse (Mr. Orsi’s running mate) will be sworn in as Vice President at the same time, and will succeed Ms. Beatriz Argimón.

Key electoral issues in 2024 revolved around measures to tackle poverty and crime. The elections were held alongside polls concerning two constitutional amendments. One was on pension reforms that aimed to lower the retirement age from 65 to 60 years old. The other was a security issue – whether to lift a ban on nighttime police raids on homes. Both amendments were rejected.
