Elections to the Senate are normally held in November* in the year when the Senate’s five-year term expires.
*In accordance with article 76 of the Electoral Code, Senate elections are held no later than one month after elections of the deputies of the Jokarghy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and local councils (kengashes), which are held simultaneously with elections to the Legislative Chamber** (the lower chamber of parliament).
**In accordance with article 128 of the Constitution, elections to the Legislative Chamber are normally held on the first Sunday of the third decade of October (i.e. between 20 and 30 October) in the year when the Chamber’s five-year term expires, unless they are called earlier by the President of the Republic.

Note on the statutory number of members:
In accordance with the constitutional amendments adopted through a referendum held in April 2023, the statutory number of senators decreased after the 2024 elections from 100* to 65 as follows:
- 56 members are indirectly elected by local councils (kengashes): four senators from each of the 14 administrative units comprised of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, 12 regions and the city of Tashkent;
- 9 members appointed by the President of the Republic from among the most authoritative citizens with extensive practical experience and special merits in the fields of science, art, literature, production and other areas of state and public activity.*The previous Senate comprised 84 members indirectly elected by local councils, and 16 eminent members appointed by the President of the Republic.
